The Importance of Work Experience

The reality of the current economic situation dictates that Dublin jobs are as rare as hen's teeth and for those leaving college, or wishing to change career, work experience is a necessity. It is now almost impossible to come out of work and fit straight into professional employment without some sort of on the job experience. Though this may seem like a significant change and also an irritation, the benefits of work experience to employees is significant.

One the Job Experience

In the case of college students - many leave their courses with no more than a theoretical understanding of what needs to be done in the workplace and have no knowledge of the workplace in practice. Work experience allows you to see how you fit in with a certain culture and then whether you wish to follow this path. This also allows you to develop those on the job skills most employers look for and create relationships with other professionals. This is all of equal importance to the course you have undertaken and really is the practical way to begin to live your dream job.

Experience

Another benefit of work experience is that it offers you the chance to partake in experience which you can then place on your CV. Such experience is of significant benefit in the workplace and can swing a job in your favour if you're equal in ability to another person in an interview. It is these small edges that make the difference and can turn you from wannabe into a professional. Work experience is also a great way for employers to see who has the drive to succeed and can really create a very positive appeal on a CV. Employers see you have the gumption to give it your all for free and this will place you in a healthy position and create a positive opinion in the minds of those who interview you.

Employment

In many cases work experience can turn into a full time job. People often find that the experience is a great way to make themselves indispensible and is the opportunity to take foothold in a company. Grasp the chance with both hands and don't let go of it, show them why they need you when your placement is over. This will make them see your worth and put you on track for a job.

Where to Get it

A mantra of persistence, professionalism and eagerness are the only ways you are firstly going to get work experience in Dublin and secondly get onwards from it. The reality of the situation is that even experience can be hard to get and may involve numerous letters, which would have got you a job a few years ago. Make sure your letters and CV are top notch and create that vital first impression. Look through job sites and newspapers, as well as mediums such as Linkedin and Branchout, which are also great for jobs. Twitter is also a good place to look in certain fields and can throw up some opportunities.

Though, all of this is true, word of mouth is often one of the best ways to get a job. In a small country like Ireland, knowing of a job can really give you the chance to make an impression before it is even up for application.

Though, remember be persistent and send off tailored emails, showing them you want to work there. Research the company, send off examples of relevant work and impress them with experience, a positive tone and by being eager. Maybe add a few good ideas into the mix and tell them how you can help their company. Don't be arrogant - just be polite and confident and you'll go a long way.

So, the benefits of work experience are vast, so make it count and make them want you.
