A mobile phone contract is not exactly like marriage but get
a bad phone and it can seem longer like a good relationship.
There are millions of phone
deals on offer and with all the minutes, handsets and different
bonuses; it can be a near impossibility to work which is the best one for you.
Essentially, every text unused, minute unutilised and
megabyte of data unbrowsed is wasted money at the end of each month. The other
side of the coin is when you use over your allowance and having to pay
excessive extra costs because of it. So, how do you get your hands on the best
deals?
Get what
you need
So many of us have the latest phone for no reason other than
we got magpie syndrome when we were looking for a phone. This can mean we are
paying over the odds for our contract and don't nearly
use up our allowances.
Before you buy a new handset, monitor your minutes for a
month or two, get the average and then add 10% for emergencies. This should
give you the amount of minutes you require. Then examine the needs you have
from a phone and look at phones that meet those tech criteria.
Staying
with your Current Provider
Ringing up and asking your current company for your PAC code
is a sure fire way to be sent to the retentions department. This number allows
you to change to another network and still keep your phone number. Network
providers see it as the end of days and will offer you all sorts of deals. Ask
for a doubling of your current minutes at the same price, or credit on your
account. And remember the more you spend each month, the more they fight to
keep you.
Moving
Elsewhere? - Shop Around
There are four major networks and each offer different deals
and want to outdo each other for your business. When looking for a contract,
shop around the four and when you get the best deal from one of the four, use
the deal to barter with the mobile phone company you most want to utilise. They're
often desperate for business and the longer you've been with them, the more
effort they'll put into keeping you. This simple tactic alone can save you
hundreds of Euros over the length of a contract.
Bundles
If you're the sort of person who travels a lot outside of
your country or the EU or if you need a lot of data as you use the Internet a
lot - look
for deals on this too. Providers will offer you lower costing
bundles, or if they want to keep you will throw them in for free. Fight for
these little extras, as they can make your phone a lot cheaper if you've
specific requirements.
So, if you want to save on your phone deals - try the
aforementioned tips.
