Things to look out for with Mobile Broadband

Though it may all seem like smooth running when you're talking to the salesman in the shop, there are a number of things to be wary of when choosing a mobile broadband package. We look at some of the most common ones.

Fair Usage

Some broadband and mobile broadband companies provide what is known as unlimited broadband, which you would imagine allows you to download as much as you would like. However, these are often covered by fair usage policies. These can often come as a surprise to heavier users, who only realise their size when they have to foot a surprisingly large bill.

This 'ceiling limit' as it is known will find you on the other end of slower broadband or in some cases even no broadband for the remainder of the month as well as large bills. Though most users will seldom reach this limit, be aware of it and ask what it is when choosing.

Bandwidth

Some mobile broadband services will cover your area, but with a slow and often antiquated form of mobile broadband known as GPRS or EDGE. These are slower than 3G and HSPA broadband services considerably. Though, it may seem you have coverage when looking at the network providers map online, it may be one of these slower services.

For those who want to stream, download or will require a lot of bandwidth, these can be a nightmare and really limit your service and speed of service.

Dongle Fees

Look into whether you will have to pay for the dongle or if there will be a cost involved with purchasing or renting it. Some networks often require a down payment of some sort on this technology, so be aware of it when you compare broadband services.

Inclusive Features

Sometimes you will find that your mobile phone provider will offer you special deals on broadband. This can be a good way to lower the cost of your broadband. However, do beware and compare your broadband as many 'deals' are not what they seem.

Some broadband is quite expensive even when on a 'deal'. Use a broadband comparison site to choose which broadband is actually cheaper and beware of these phone calls.

Haggle

Just as you would haggle for your mobile phone deal, you can also haggle for your mobile broadband deal. Many companies will often seem like they are doing you a favour when they provide your broadband needs. Haggle with them and use other company's deals as a bartering point to lower the cost of broadband or increase the data limit on your broadband. This can make all the difference to your usage and satisfaction with these services. So compare broadband, do your homework and get the most from your mobile broadband service.

So, follow the above advice and you'll soon find yourself with the perfect broadband package for you.
