Getting a New Phone with Bad Credit

Sometimes for whatever reason or another, some of us just have bad credit. This can mean you are declined from getting a mobile phone contract among other things.

In the case of mobile phone contracts, each network provider has different criteria and these impacts on you getting a contract. So, if you've found yourself being refused a phone contract, what can you do to increase your chances for the next time you apply?

Previous Bad Credit

If you have a previous bad credit history this counts for around 30% of your score when applying for a new phone contract. In this case County Court Judgements, defaults or missed and late payments are taken into account. These are on your history for 6 years and diminish in importance with a period of time. Try and avoid these issues to prevent your score being seriously affected.

Electoral Roll

The electoral roll is also important and can make all the difference to your application. If you are not registered at your current address this can affect your application and make for all sorts of problems. Those who don't show themselves to be long term residents at an address are often seen as less preferable for mobile phone networks.

Current Address

Networks like seeing that you've lived at your current address for three years or more and this can really help with your score and make all the difference. If you've lived here for less time than that and are a tenant, you will especially be hit and your chances of a new phone may take a dive.

Work

The line of work you do and the length of time you have done it also affects the score and lenders prefer people who have worked at a job continuously. Security is a very important part of getting a new phone and a steady employment record shows you can keep up with payments.

Of course, if you changed jobs recently and now receive a higher salary you will still be a preferable person to offer a contract to and this won't really affect the check. This may mean you have to show employment and pay slips to prove your capability of paying for the network.

Banks

The longer you are with your bank, the better your credit score. Changing banks or opening new accounts is a negative when you are looking for a new mobile phone contract.

Application

If you do end up being refused from your contract, then you should consider whether or not to apply. Constant denials for credit also affect your score. So, take your time in between applications and you won't end up with a significant problem in this area.

So, try and keep a good credit history and you can have almost any phone you want.
